Fire Alarm Cables
Fire alarm cables that connect detectors, sounders and control panels. We make a shielded two-core copper cable in a red sheath, so fire alarm wiring is easy to identify on site.
- 2 core, shielded
- 1.5 & 2.5 mm²
- Solid or stranded
- Red PVC sheath
ISO 9001:2015 certified. Manufacturing since 1994.

Fire alarm cable links smoke and heat detectors, manual call points, sounders and the control panel into one system. Ours is a two-core cable with red and black insulated copper conductors, wrapped in a foil screen with a drain wire, under a red PVC sheath printed for fire alarm circuits so it is never mistaken for other wiring.
The foil screen protects the alarm signal from electrical interference, and a ripcord under the sheath lets installers strip the cable quickly without nicking the cores. We make it in 1.5 mm² and 2.5 mm², with 99.9% pure copper conductors.

Construction
How fire alarm cable is built
Six parts: two copper conductors, core insulation, a foil screen, a drain wire, a ripcord and the red outer sheath.

Illustrative two-core construction. Confirm product-specific materials and dimensions. Diagram not to scale.
Copper conductors
Two 99.9% pure copper conductors, in 1.5 mm² or 2.5 mm², carry the detector and sounder circuits. Available solid or stranded; stranded is shown.
Core insulation
PVC insulation in red and black, so polarity stays clear at every device.
Foil screen
A metal foil wrapped around both cores that shields the alarm signal from electrical interference.
Drain wire
A bare wire in contact with the foil, used to connect the screen to earth at the panel.
Ripcord
A strong thread under the sheath. Pull it to split the sheath cleanly without cutting into the cores.
Red outer sheath
A red PVC sheath printed for fire alarm use, the colour that identifies fire alarm wiring on site.
Fire alarm cable sizes
Two conductor sizes, both two-core. Choose the size and conductor type your fire alarm design specifies.
Shielded two-core
Red and black copper cores, foil screen, drain wire and ripcord, red PVC sheath.

Fire Alarm Cables FAQs
What is fire alarm cable used for?
It connects the parts of a fire alarm system: smoke and heat detectors, manual call points, sounders, bells and the control panel. The red sheath identifies it as fire alarm wiring, so it is not confused with power or data cables.
Is this cable fire-resistant?
No. This is a PVC-insulated, PVC-sheathed shielded cable for fire alarm signal wiring. It is not rated to keep working in a fire. If your fire alarm design or your consultant calls for fire-resistant or circuit-integrity cable, tell us the specification before you order so we can confirm what we can supply.
Why is the cable shielded?
Fire alarm panels read small signals from each detector. The foil screen keeps electrical noise from power cables, lighting and machinery out of those signals, which helps prevent faults and false alarms. The drain wire connects the screen to earth, normally at the panel end.
Should I choose 1.5 mm² or 2.5 mm²?
1.5 mm² is the common size for detector loops. 2.5 mm² has lower resistance, so designers choose it for longer runs and for circuits that carry more current, such as sounders. Follow your fire alarm design or the panel manufacturer's instructions.
Solid or stranded: which should I choose?
Both carry the same circuits. Solid cores hold their shape and are easy to terminate in detector bases and panel terminals, so they are common in fixed wiring. Stranded cores are more flexible and easier to pull through conduit with many bends. Follow your design or installer's preference.
Why is fire alarm cable red?
Red is the accepted colour for fire alarm wiring. It lets electricians, inspectors and maintenance staff identify the circuits at a glance and avoid cutting or disturbing them by mistake.
What is the ripcord for?
The ripcord is a strong thread that runs under the sheath. Pulling it splits the sheath along its length, so you can expose the cores quickly without using a blade near the insulation.
